About The Turf and Gardening Store

  • The Turf and Gardening Store, with locations in Roanoke and Richmond, Virginia, was conceived to provide professional lawn and garden products - normally available only to professional landscapers, athletic field managers, and golf course superintendents - to the Do-It-Yourself homeowner.
    • You won't meet a more passionate, service-oriented, professional team anywhere.
    • We offer professional-grade lawn and garden products at prices as good or better than those offered in the "big box" stores.
    • In general our products represent a much better value as the percentage of active ingredient is significantly higher producing the desired results with less product and fewer applications.

Our History

  • In the late 1940's, our founding father, Willard "Bill" Connelly joined forces with Mr. Agnew to create the Feed & Seed Shop on the Roanoke City Market. They specialized in much needed materials such as chicken feed, dog food, grass seed, and fertilizers.
  • In the late 1950's, there became a high demand for highway grass seeding applications. Bill took advantage of his knowledge of agriculture and agronomy and created a hydro-seeding division called Environmental Turf & Erosion Control Services.
  • In 1973, Bill Connelly passed away unexpectedly, leaving his son, Eugene "Kip" Connelly to take over the family business. Kip has been instrumental in the growth and stability of the company and is still President of our parent company, W.S. Connelly & Company, Inc.
  • In 1976, Kip purchased Lynchburg, Virginia based Landscape Supply, Inc., and moved the business to Salem, Virginia. In 1984, the business moved into the building at 101 Madison Avenue in Roanoke that still holds our corporate offices.
  • Landscape Supply, Inc., opened its first Richmond branch in Western Henrico County in 1999, and opened another branch in Midlothian in 2004. In 2006 LSI’s Charlottesville branch opened and a year later the Williamsburg store was opened. Our growth didn’t stop there, however. In 2012 we opened and branch in Virginia Beach and closed our Williamsburg store. In 2013 we opened our newest branch in Chantilly.

Extending the Stores - Using the Internet and eCommerce

  • So in early 2014 Kip decided to take a much closer look at the potential of using the Internet and to embrace eCommerce as a method of offering lawn and garden solutions to the homeowner.
  • After considerable research and hiring an eCommerce consulting firm W.S. Connelly launched its first website.  Like most such undertakings the initial effort was a good first step but it quickly became clear that additional functionality, a more extensive product catalog and an improved customer interface was required.
  • In the later part of 2014 Kevin Connelly, Vice President of Marketing and Sales, took over the development effort resulting in the relaunch of the Turf and Gardening site as
  • The relaunch of the new and improved site was done in October of 2015.  But in relaunching the site Kevin maintained the company's strong commitment to customer education and to the sale of professional products proven and time tested as viable and cost effective solutions to lawn and garden requirements.
